One of the most common things we hear in the clinic is: “I’m fine walking around or exercising… but sitting destroys my back.”
And honestly, it makes sense.
Most people today are sitting:
- at work
- in traffic
- at home
- on the couch
- at dinner
- scrolling on their phone
Even people who train regularly can still end up with tight hips, stiff backs and annoying lower back pain from spending most of the day seated.
Sitting Isn’t “Bad” — But Too Much Of It Is
A lot of people think their posture is the problem.
They’ll try to sit perfectly straight all day and force their shoulders back, but usually that just creates a different kind of tension.
The reality is:
Your body just doesn’t like staying in one position for hours.
Usually, what we see is:
- stiff hips
- tight hip flexors
- weak or inactive glutes
- overloaded lower back muscles
- reduced upper back movement
Then, once you sit long enough, the lower back starts doing more work than it should.
Why Some People Feel Worse AFTER Sitting
This is the interesting part.
A lot of patients actually tell us:
“I feel better moving around.”
That’s because movement increases blood flow, gets joints moving, and stops the body from stiffening up.
Sitting for long periods does the opposite.
That’s why people often feel:
- sore getting out of the car
- stiff standing up from their desk
- tight bending forward
- locked up in the mornings
What Actually Helps?
There’s no one magic stretch or perfect chair, unfortunately.
Usually, the answer is a combination of:
- moving more frequently
- improving strength
- improving hip and upper back mobility
- changing workload
- hands-on treatment
- learning better movement habits
For some people, it’s gym-related.
For others, it’s purely a work setup and sitting tolerance.
Everyone’s a bit different.
You Don’t Need To Be An Athlete To Get Treated
A lot of people hear “sports chiropractic” and assume we only treat athletes.
Honestly, most of our patients are everyday people:
- office workers
- parents
- tradies
- runners
- gym-goers
- people just trying to get through work without pain
You don’t need to be playing professional sport to want your body feeling better.
When Should You Get It Checked?
If the pain:
- keeps returning
- is affecting work
- spreads into the leg
- stops you training
- makes sitting uncomfortable
- is becoming more frequent
It’s probably worth getting assessed properly rather than just constantly stretching it and hoping for the best.
