Located in Fremont, California, Ohlone College has a strong baseball tradition and is part of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).

Many renowned baseball players have passed through Ohlone College, refining their skills and preparing for higher levels of competition, including the Major League Baseball (MLB).

Ohlone College Baseball's success is further highlighted by its players frequently being scouted by MLB teams. Several athletes have made the leap from Ohlone College to the professional level, showcasing the strong connection between the college and the MLB.

You might think why would they go back to deadlifting again if they hurt themselves. It is definitely not easy both mentally and physically to go back to doing what hurt you in the first place, but with the right guidance, it is possible, safe and even healthier to overcome your fears and face the dragon !

P.s. Deadlifts are not bad for your back, only if performed with incorrect technique, or whilst you have a dysfunction. If anything, avoiding deadlifts might not be helpful for you long term.

There are many reasons why the low back is painful

There are many reasons why the low back is painful during a deadlift. Technique problem, mechanical issues, joint dysfunctions, muscle co-ordinations and the list goes on.

However, the most common one we see often is a hip dysfunction causing low back to be overloaded, especially in today’s sedentary lifestyle

What this means is that the low back is working abnormally harder and longer, because the hip muscles aren’t working properly (weakness, tightness or restriction)

In a deadlift, the hips need to function as the main driver, when they don’t, the weaker low back acts as the spare wheel to still help you execute the movement, but obviously doesn’t have the strength or capacity to deliver as well as the hips can, hence over time, the low back starts to break down and lead to painful things like muscle tightness, disc bulges, herniations, sciatica.

Until you repair and replace the main wheel (hips) the poor spare tyre (spine) will have to take on the load. What a hero right !? so don’t blame the area in pain, its working hard for you, focus on fixing the main reason why its overloaded, and your body will be much happier

We notice quite often clients come in all guarded up with the thought of nothing is going to help with their pain.

The number of times the consultation starts off with "I've tried everything under the sun" or my personal favourite straight up "I hate chiropractors" and ends up being "wow I guess not" show us that we need to educate people more on having an open mind to trying not just a different therapies, but different practitioners.

If you had a bad experience with one mechanic, doesn't mean all mechanics will be bad right?

Every practitioner is so unique in their own ways, even amongst the same profession, so make sure to seek second, third, fourth opinions until you find someone who connects well with you

Imagine if blood pressure monitors were never invented and we had to rely on how they are feeling to check if they are improving or declining, or even know they have a problem with blood pressure in the first place.

Assessing the quality of a movement is more accurate if you can measure and quantify it. As we can see there is a noticeable difference between left and right, but it is only significant because we measured, otherwise we wouldn't know how different it is leg vs right.

Being able to put a number and score the movements allow us to test objectively and not just rely on the patients' varying responses on "how does that feel?" Its effective to see what percentage the stability is lacking, set a number as a goal and track the progress.

Also, a classic example that your best rehab exercise is the test that you failed 😉
